George Powell was born to Willie and Elaine Powell on November 29, 1978.
He was born and raised in Austin, Texas and is the 4th child of 5 children.
His siblings are Dani Dukes, Davin Dukes, Willie Jr., and Vincent Powell.
George attended Lyndon B. Johnson High School and graduated in 1997. He
later received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Huston-Tillotson
University. While attending H-TU, he received numerous music scholarships
including the Presidents Scholarship. He also served as student tutor,
student voice teacher, and student conductor for the College Choir. He
was recognized by Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities
and was also featured in the 2003-2004 edition of Hobson’s Guide
to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
George serves as the Worship Pastor of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church
of Austin, under the fearless leadership of Senior Pastor Gaylon Clark.
Prior to being called to serve as Worship Pastor of Greater Mt. Zion in
February 2004, he was Minister of Music at Nineteenth Street Baptist Church
under the leadership of Rev. M.C. Walker. While there, he planned the
worship services as well as coordinated and directed the music program,
including the adult, men’s, young adults, and children’s choirs.
All of these ensembles grew exponentially under his leadership and he
was instrumental in fast forwarding the worship style from traditional
to blended.
Pastor Powell accepted his call into the Gospel ministry in 1988 at the
age of 8 at Greater Union Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor
Edward C. Craig. This is where he began his ministry journey and discovered
that God had a purpose of spiritual leadership for his life. His goal
of ministry is to lead true worshipers in worshiping God in spirit and
truth, who are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (John 4:23). His
unique spiritual abilities include preaching, teaching, singing, and playing
piano.
George released his demo CD entitled “Trust and Believe” in
2003. His writing ability is featured throughout the entire CD, but especially
in songs such as “When Will America Bless God” and “In
The Meantime.” His arrangement of the time-honored “Faith
That Conquers” and rendition of “Because He Lives” are
favorites of all who have heard this project.
George considers his relationship with Rochelle to have been pre-destined
by God and believes deeply that she was prepared just for him. His relationship
with her is a testimony that God hears and answers prayer. He enjoys spending
meaningful moments with her and experiencing the warmth and richness of
her presence on a daily basis. His desire is to learn how to love her
more everyday.
